Is Pizza Hut Cheese Suitable for Vegetarians?

By Jeanne Yacoubou, MS

Do you ever wonder if the cheese used by Pizza Hut is vegetarian-friendly? We reached out to Pizza Hut to clarify their cheese ingredient information. Here’s what we discovered.

The Cheese-Making Enzyme

We were curious about the enzyme Pizza Hut uses to make their pizza cheese. According to Pizza Hut’s customer service representative, the enzyme is derived from microbial fermentation and is not of animal origin. However, it’s important to note that Pizza Hut does not label any of their products as “vegetarian” or “vegan” due to the common preparation area shared with meat products.

Cheeses Containing Animal Rennet

We also asked if any of the cheeses at Pizza Hut contain animal rennet. It turns out that the Parmesan Romano cheese blend used in P’Zones, Breadsticks, Ultimate Cheese Pizza, and some dine-in products contains both microbial enzymes and animal-based rennet. However, customers have the option to request that the “breadstick seasoning” or “Parmesan parsley blend” be excluded from their dishes. Again, Pizza Hut does not claim any of their products to be vegetarian or vegan due to the shared preparation area.

Meat in Pizza Sauce?

Pizza Hut clarified that their pizza sauce and marinara sauce do not contain any beef or other meat products. However, as mentioned earlier, all products are prepared in a common area with meat products, making it challenging to label any items as vegetarian or vegan. Nonetheless, Pizza Hut’s restaurant team is willing to take additional precautions upon request to accommodate guests with dietary concerns.

Dough Enzymes

When it comes to Pizza Hut’s crusts, there are no animal byproducts used. The enzymes present in some of their dough, including the breadstick dough, are derived from a microbial origin and serve as dough conditioners. Nevertheless, Pizza Hut does not claim any of their products to be vegetarian or vegan for the same reasons mentioned above.

Vegan Cheese Options

Currently, Pizza Hut does not offer vegan cheese. However, the company is actively exploring options for vegan cheese alternatives. For those interested in Pizza Hut menu options, their online nutrition calculator can be helpful, as it provides ingredient information for each menu item and allows filtering for specific allergens.
