Fun and Flexible

I always make sure I have sandwich bread, pizza sauce (or marinara sauce), mozzarella cheese, and mini pepperoni on hand to make Pizza Toast anytime we crave it. What I love about this recipe is its flexibility. Whether you want to make just one or a dozen, it’s entirely up to you. Plus, you can customize the toppings to your heart’s content.

While we usually keep it simple with cheese and pepperoni, there are endless possibilities for dressing it up. Imagine adding peppers, fresh basil, mushrooms, a sprinkle of parmesan cheese, or even pineapple (oops, did I just start a debate 😜). Let your imagination run wild with your favorite pizza toppings! You can even use sourdough bread if that’s what you have available. This recipe is so versatile, you’ll find yourself making it over and over again!

How to Make Pizza Toast

To ensure your pizza toast tastes its best, there are a few tricks to keep in mind. First, toast the bread for about 5 minutes by itself to give it a crispy base. If you’re only making a couple of slices, a toaster oven will work just fine. Otherwise, the oven is your friend.

Once the bread is toasted, layer it with pizza sauce (store-bought sauce works great), a good melty mozzarella cheese, and mini pepperoni. Then, return it to the oven to melt the cheese and make the pepperoni glisten.

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  • Spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and place the bread slices on it. Bake for 5 minutes until they start to toast.
  • Remove the toasted bread from the oven and spread each slice with 1 tablespoon of pizza sauce. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce and garnish with about 16 mini pepperonis. Return to the oven for 8-10 minutes or until the cheese is nice and melty.
