Frozen Bao Buns: A Chinese Delight

While I absolutely love our air fryer frozen dumplings recipe, I’m always on the lookout for new Chinese frozen dumplings to try in the air fryer. One day, frozen bao buns caught my attention on Facebook, and I made a mental note to give them a go in the air fryer when I returned to England.

When the time finally came, I popped a pack of Itsu bao buns into the air fryer basket, and it was a revelation. I couldn’t believe I had been missing out on these delicious treats for so long. Today, I want to share this amazing frozen food discovery with you, so you can give it a try in your own air fryer.

A bao bun is a Chinese delicacy consisting of a warm dough stuffed with various fillings. It’s a type of Chinese dumpling but with a bread-like texture. Bao buns are often referred to as steamed buns and can be found in many Chinese restaurants and street food markets. Due to their texture, they are perfect for air frying. Trust me, if you’ve never tried Chinese steamed buns before, you absolutely must!

Fortunately, you can easily find frozen bao buns at your local supermarket or Chinese grocery store. In fact, we got our Itsu frozen bao buns from our nearby Tesco’s and had them conveniently delivered with our online order.

Are Frozen Bao Buns Worth It?

Absolutely! I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious these frozen bao buns turned out when cooked in the air fryer. The air fryer gave them an incredible texture and mouthwatering taste. You can mix and match with your favorite fillings and brands to create your own flavorsome combinations. For example, I air fried the Itsu buns with teriyaki and hoisin flavors, and they were exceptional.   • Buns: You’ll need a full box of Itsu bao buns or a similar brand. No need to defrost them beforehand, as you can cook the bao buns straight from frozen.
  • Sauce: I love pairing my air-fried steamed buns with a dipping sauce that complements the filling. For instance, I’d use teriyaki sauce for chicken teriyaki buns. Feel free to get creative with your sauce selections!

For this recipe, we used our trusty Cosori air fryer, which has served us well for many air fryer dishes. How To Cook Frozen Bao Buns In Air Fryer Step-by-Step:

  1. Load: Remove the frozen buns from their packaging and place them in the air fryer basket. Make sure not to stack them, as you want them to cook evenly.
  2. Cook: Air fry at 180°C/360°F for 8 minutes.
  3. Serve: Transfer the cooked bao buns to a bowl and serve them with your favorite Chinese dipping sauce.
